While liquid cooling is getting more attention, experts say it will remain essential in data centers for the foreseeable future.
As IT equipment makers turn to liquid cooling to remove heat from high-power chips, IT’s important to remember that many components in data centers will remain air-cooled, and they may stay that way for many years to come.
Once a liquid cooling device is used, heat is transferred to the device. Some of the heat is dissipated into the surrounding space, requiring air cooling to remove it. As a result, mixing facilities are emerging to maximize the benefits of air and liquid cooling. After all, each cooling technology has its obvious advantages and disadvantages. Some are more efficient, but difficult to implement, requiring a large upfront investment. Others are cheap, but struggle once the density level exceeds a certain point.
